Analysis: 'Treaty of Waitangi' Comic For High School Students Has Been Quietly Brainwashing Away Since 2018 (Part 27)

In short, the comic was released into schools in 2018  to brainwash our children.

What is its purpose?

Maori Activists inside the Labour government, particularly the Maori caucus, supported by the Greens and Te Pati Maori, plus a hoard of woke bureaucrats are grooming our children so that when our children leave school and become old enough to vote, they will vote for the Maori activist cause.

In this way, so their plan goes, Maori will be able to legitimately and legally take over the country.  That is to say, they are grooming our children to vote for the Maori activist cause.  This comic is therefore propaganda.

What’s happening here is exactly what happened in other regimes in the 1920s and 30s, preparing the ground for dictatorship. In the case of New Zealand, it’s  preparing the country for tribal rule. 

Hitler had his Hitler Youth.

Now we have the “Maori Youth” mirroring them, as evidenced by the actions of Female Hurricanes, the students of a Palmerston North School, and the Maori who tried to stop the fishing contest in Northland. Here is another example – click HERE and  click HERE

So what is there to say about this picture on page 8?

Today I want to comment on the following sentences from the comic, page 8.  They are “Almost all of the chiefs who signed Te Tiriti signed the te reo Maori version, but only a few were able to read it. This meant they had to ask questions and trust the answers. For Maori, the spoken promises made by British officials were more important than the written text.  However, the main aim of the officials was to get the chiefs to sign. Their explanations about how Te Tiriti would affect the chiefs and their people were often misleading.” 

This is more shameful writing. Why? 

First, there are barbs in these sentences.  Such as? “However, the main aim of the officials was to get the chiefs to sign.”  

This implies they were tricked into signing, or forced to sign.  In previous blogs, we have discussed how all the evidence points to the opposite conclusion. What conclusion?  That the British did everything they could to make sure the chiefs understood the Treaty before signing it.  Secondly, that they did understand it. 

Another barb? That verbal promises were made by the British to the chiefs, but the British did not keep these promises.  What promises? We are not told. All the students reading this comic will get is that the British broke their word.  They made promises that they did not keep.  This will lead the students reading this comic to the conclusion that 1. Maori deserve compensation.  2.  That the colonials were dubious characters. Hence New Zealand must decolonise.  Which means what? It means that Maori want non-Maori to leave the country so that Maori can be free to take over and make New Zealand a Maori nation.  A nation ruled by Maori for Maori. 

Another barb?  That the British made verbal promises which were different from the written promises made in the Treaty.  This is impossible. Why?  I have read most of the correspondence between the governors and the colonial office in the period 1840 – 1845 and there is not a trace of evidence for any claim that verbal promises were made that were at variance from the promises in the Treaty. 

What are we to make of the accusation in the comic that few Maori chiefs could read te reo, and therefore had to trust the answers which the British gave, as they replied to questions from the chiefs? 

First things first.  The 5 parts of the Treaty (Preamble, 3 Articles, and an Affirmation) would not fill one A4 page.   It’s a very short document. 

For how long did the chiefs discuss the Treaty on the 5th and 6th of February 1840?

On the 5th, we know it was all afternoon.  We know for a fact that the meeting started at noon.  Sunset on the 6th of February, taking into account daylight saving, is 7:36 pm.  Conservatively, that’s 6 hours of discussion. 

We know, as I have pointed out in previous blogs, that the chiefs retired to Tii Marae with Henry Williams and his son Edward on the evening of the 5th.  We don’t know for how long the discussion went on. Was it just a few hours?  Until midnight? Or all night?  

We don’t know.  All we know is that they retired to the Marae for further discussion, Q and A. Let’s be conservative and presume 2 hours.

All up, 8 hours to discuss 1 A4 size document. 

Hobson expected them to take a week to discuss the Treaty.  He was happy to give them this amount of time.  There was to be no rushing. 

What we do know is that on the morning of the next day, the 6th of February,  some of the chiefs were ready to sign.  In total, 52/62 chiefs signed.

Now here is the point – even if the chiefs could not read te reo (I don’t have any evidence to counter this claim.  The comic simply makes the claim without giving evidence), there was ample time to discuss the written texts.  At least 8 hours in fact.  That’s a lot of time for such a small document. 

No one was forced to sign, or coerced to sign. Hobson had made it clear to his officials that no one was to sign the Treaty unless they understood it.  

I have quoted this before but will quote it again here: 

“Henry Williams reported to Bishop Selwyn. ‘The instruction of Captain Hobson was not to allow any one to sign the treaty till he fully understood it. To which instruction I did most strictly attend. That the natives to whom I explained the treaty understood the nature of the same, there can be no doubt.”’ (Bruce Moon.  Twisting The Treaty. A Tribal Grab For Wealth And Power. Tross Publishing. 2013. p 35)

Henry Williams, the key player in the Treaty, said he strictly obeyed this instruction of Hobson.  I am a school teacher.  This is my profession.  School teachers just know if their student have ‘got’ what they are teaching or not. 

Henry Williams knew the chiefs had ‘got’ what the British intended them to get.

As I pointed out in yesterday’s blog, the speeches of the chiefs on the 5th indicated that they understood the Treaty. 

Those who signed the Treaty later in 1840, like Te Hapuku, showed they understood the Treaty. 

Conclusion? Even if the chiefs could not read Te Reo, they had ~8 hours to discuss it / have questions answered.   The evidence is clear that at the end of this time, the chiefs understood the Treaty.  They were not forced to sign.  They signed according to their free intelligent will.  The only promises made to the chiefs were those made in the Treaty.  The chiefs were not misled.  In the affirmation of the Treaty they acknowledge that, before signing,  they understood what they were signing.

Today I want to comment on three sentences in the comic.  They are “Important words and concepts, such as sovereignty, weren’t properly explained in Te Reo Maori.  Many people think this was done on purpose.  Whatever the case, there were many contradictions.” 

This writing is shamefully deceitful.  Why? 

On the 5th of February, 1840, the day before the Treaty was signed, 62 chiefs were in the tent at Waitangi. The meeting started at 12 noon.

The Treaty was read to them in English and Maori.   A line in English was read, then translated into Maori by Henry Williams. The British did this so that Maori could judge for themselves whether the translation was accurate or not.  Many of the chiefs could speak and write English..   The missionary Colenso took meticulous notes of what everyone said.  There is no record that Maori objected to the translation accuracy. 

During the afternoon of the 5th of February, from midday until sun set, the Treaty was debated and discussed.  Basically, it was a long Q and A session. Many missionaries, who had already built relationship with the chiefs, were in the tent too, assisting the chiefs, helping them understand. 

That evening, the 5th of February, the chiefs plus Henry Williams and his son Edward retired to Tii Marae for further discussion, questions and answers. 

Why did the British go to such lengths to make sure the chiefs understood the Treaty?  

First. Hobson was under strict instructions from Lord Normanby, colonial secretary in London, to make sure that nothing was done without ‘the free intelligent consent of the natives.’  To view all of Lord Normanby’s instructions, click HERE.

Second, the missionaries had been building relationship with the chiefs.  They were careful to make sure nothing was done which would ruin their Christian witness / reputation before the chiefs. Anything but full transparency and honesty would have been unacceptable to them. 

Third, Henry Williams wrote to Bishop Selwyn, saying the following. 

“The instruction of Captain Hobson was not to allow any one to sign the treaty till he fully understood it. To which instruction I did most strictly attend. That the natives to whom I explained the treaty understood the nature of the same, there can be no doubt.” ( Bruce Moon.  Twisting The Treaty. A Tribal Grab For Wealth And Power. Fourth, the speeches of the chiefs were recorded by Colenso. They indicate that the chiefs clearly understood the Treaty. 

For example, the first speaker was Te Kemara, chief of the Ngati Kawa tribe.

“Health to thee, O Governor. I am not pleased toward thee [i.e. I don’t like your Treaty]. I shall never say yes to your staying [i.e. I don’t like your Treaty]. Were we to be an equality [i.e. equal], then perhaps Te Kemara would say yes.  But for the Governor to be up [ i.e. sovereign] and Te Kemara to be down [ i.e. a subject]  – Governor high up up up, and Te Kemara down low, small, a worm, a crawler. Other chiefs expressed similar understanding.  When Hobson had a stroke on March 1st, 1840, British military man Bunbury was sent off to the South Island by Hobson to gather more signatures of the chiefs. 

Historian Michael Wright reports.

“When Bunbury explained the Treaty to Te Hapuku, the chief urged that Maori would be made slaves, and demonstrated what he meant by drawing ‘a sort of diagram’ on a board, ‘placing the Queen by herself over the chiefs as these were over the tribes’.  Bunbury assured him ‘it was literally as he described it, but not for evil purpose…but to enable her to enforced her execution of justice and good government equally among her subjects.” (Michael Wright.  Illustrated History of New Zealand. Bateman Press, 2013. page 60)

Te Hapuku understood the concept of sovereignty perfectly.  How do we know? Bunbury agreed with Te Hapuku’s explanation. 

Join the dots.  When one puts all the evidence together – Lord Normanby’s instructions, Hobson’s Instructions to Williams, the amount of time the British spent with the chiefs explaining the Treaty to them, the short length of the document, Henry William’s note to Bishop Selywn, the content of the speeches of the chiefs.  

When one collates all the evidence, there can only be one conclusion. What’s that? That the chiefs fully understood the Treaty they signed. 

To suggest, as the comic does, that they didn’t understand, and that they were tricked, not only contradicts the truth of the matter, the facts, but it is a bare faced lie. 

And the students of our country are being told to believe it all, hook line and sinker.
