• William Ellison (b 1790) was a large slave owner with 63 slaves – He was an American cotton gin maker, blacksmith and slave owner in South Carolina. He was much respected throughout the district for his integrity. He was himself a freed slave who learned his business skills from his owner.
• French black Creole masters were very severe and whipped the flesh off their slaves cruelly. They were much harder on slaves than their white slave owner counterparts.
• In 1860, 3000 negro slave masters owned 20,000 slaves.
• In the US slave states in the 1860 census there were 3,953,760 slaves and 470,970 coloured free people.
• At the height of slavery in the US, 393,975 from a total population of 31 million people owned slaves. 1.2% of the population owned slaves. This included black people owning and trading black slaves.
• The vast majority of US whites never owned slaves.
• The best place to be a slave was the USA – conditions and treatment in Cuba and East Africa were far worse:

• In 1800 there was not a single country which had abolished slavery by law.
• By 1900 Britain 1833, France 1848, the USA 1865, Denmark 1848 and the Netherlands 1873, Spain 1873, Portugal 1836 had all outlawed it.
• Every single abolition took place under societies under European control or heavy European pressure.
• In a perfect Orwellian twist of irony it turns out that white men are the heroes of the slavery story!
• It was the Royal Navy West African squadron that freed hundreds of thousands of African slaves, all at the expense of the British tax payer.
• Nearly 400,000 Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War.
• It was the entirely white congress and legislatures that passed the 13th Amendment ending slavery.
• If the legacy of slavery is a permanent unpayable debt that justifies racial redistribution in perpetuity then literally every ethnic group on the planet owes every other one…
• The descendants of the kingdom of Dahomey which sold millions of their fellow Africans, owe reparations to the descendants of their victims. The Arab world would owe West Africa and Europe. The Ottomans would owe the Balkans. The Irish would owe the English and the English would owe the Irish. The list is endless because slavery is the norm, not America’s unique shame.
