Why is the final English Draft called "the Littlewood Draft?"

Clendon, the US consul in New Zealand, was doing conveyancing work with a lawyer called Littlewood in the period 1840 to 1850. Clendon gave this final English draft document to Littlewood to store. We only know this because this draft was found in a home in Pukekohe in 1989. Relatives were able to go through their family tree, which led them back to lawyer Henry Littlewood. Clendon was the last known high official who had possession of the final English draft. It is only presumed that he gave it to Littlewood because the people who owned the home in Pukekohe were direct descendants of Henry Littlewood.

What is the significance of the Littlewood Draft?

Without doubt, it's the final English draft because it mirrors Te Tiriti almost perfectly. It makes no mention of forests and fisheries. It also in includes the words '...and all the people of New Zealand ' in Article two. These words are missing from the James Freeman rogue version. If this version was accepted as the final English version, Maori would have no claim to forests and fisheries.

1. The dates are different, but to be expected. The Littlewood draft is the 4th. The Treaty in Maori is the 6th.

2. In the Treaty in Maori, the word ‘Maori’ was inserted last minute into Article 3. In other words, apart from these two differences, the Littlewood draft is a mirror image of the Treaty in Maori or Te Tiriti.
